A Personal Statement
Witnessing a stained glass repair at a beginner’s class had me fascinated - the process was so malleable, so out
of time, moving forward and backward as the moment required. At first I just “fell” into becoming a stained
glass craftsperson. The right timing and job opportunities presented themselves. There was so much to learn
and I was eager for it. Because the gifts had come so effortlessly, I can look back and understand how I did not
fully appreciate what I was capable of. It wasn’t until I left glass to pursue a “professional health care” career, did
I realize what I had surrendered.
Glass contains the best that light can offer. As the sun rises and tracks across the sky, to set in the west, the
quality of light is constantly changing, add to this the seasons of the year and your location and you have an
endless array of light interactions. W indows are the apertures in architecture that protect us from the elements
of heat, cold, rain, snow or wind, yet as humans we crave the be witness to our environment, we want to see the
nature and beauty around us. Glass provides us with both the security we seek and the beauty we desire. It is the
transition point of that external light and our need for interior comfort.
Stained glass is a refinement of these basic offerings. Not only protecting from us from the elements, but also
noisy neighbors, unpleasant streetscapes or too much exposure. It can create beauty, where there might not be
any, it can focus on enhancing the natural beauty, framing it and directing the eye to it, or it can manifest
something entirely new, harmonizing with its interior, sharing colors, textures or patterns. It is a medium well
suited for exterior glazing and internal decoration which includes far more than mirrors, autonomous panels or
lamps.
Dalle de verre has become my new favorite. It is as if everything I have done until this moment was somehow
trying to get me to this place. It is the sword of truth, double edged as I fumble and struggle with the technique,
design and actual construction. I know that this is a awesome medium completely under utilized and recognized
for it’s potential. It is a suitable counterpoint to the traditional stained glass, that I love.
